Floral Wimbledon Tennis Ball Cake

There's nothing I love more then sitting watching the tennis on a sunny day with an elderflower cordial... and gin. So you can imagine that Wimbledon season is the best time of the year, an honorary cake was in order, but why would I want to make an ugly tennis ball? The solution was pretty simple, I covered the whole cake in yellow and white flowers, although it took a long time... which was a great excuse to binge Netflix whilst doing so, it was totally worth it

On to the recipe:
Sponge:
225g butter/margarine
225g caster sugar
225g self raising flour
1tsp baking powder
4 eggs
Drop of vanilla extract
2 x semi sphere tins [link here]

Decoration:
200g icing sugar
100g butter
200g marzipan
Yellow and white fondant
Yellow food colouring

- Pre heat the oven to Gas Mark 4
1. Cream together the butter and sugar together
2. Gradually add in the eggs and vanilla
3. Sieve together the flour and baking powder
4. Fold in the flour mix
5. Grease the spherical tin and line by making a circle of parchment paper and cut up into the center, this will make lining the shape easier as it will fold into shape when lined
6. Spread the mix evenly between the two tins and bake for 30 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean
7. Allow to cool and remove from tin
8. Whilst cooling make the buttercream, Cream together the icing sugar and butter until pale and fluffy; this will take over 5 minutes so be patient
9. Trim the cake so it's got a straight bottom and trim one of the bottom of the circles so it stays flat on the plate
10. But buttercream on the top of the circle and sandwich both semispheres together to make a full sphere
11. Buttercream around the whole cake so it is smooth
12. Roll out the marzipan so it's about the thickness of a £1 coin and place over the cake [smoothing down and cutting off the excess]
13. Cut MANY flowers out of fondant with cutters and allow to dry [you can always paint the inside with food colouring to make them stand out]
14. Using the white flowers to follow to pattern of a tennis ball

Hope you all enjoy the men's final today and bake this lovely little cake to celebrate Xx
